Guzman paces Nationals past Twins

Jason Simontacchi (3-4) went a season-high 7 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits, while walking one and striking out two. Saul Rivera recorded the final four outs for his second save in three opportunities.

Jason Kubel hit a three-run homer in the seventh and Torii Hunter had two hits and an RBI for the Twins, who have lost five of their last six.

Carlos Silva (3-7) lasted a season-low three-plus innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits, while walking two and striking out one.

The Nationals used 10 hits to score seven runs in the first four innings. Just two of those hits were for extra bases.

Washington got on the board in the first when Guzman singled and Ronnie Belliard hit a ground-rule double before Zimmerman grounded out, scoring Guzman.

Ryan Church doubled, Brian Schneider singled and Robert Fick grounded into a double play, plating Church in the second.

The Nationals added two runs in the third. Young hit an RBI single, advanced to second on Silva's balk, and scored on Church's single.

Washington went ahead 7-0 in the fourth on RBI singles by Guzman and Zimmerman and an run-scoring force out from Young.

Young's RBI single in the sixth extended the lead to 8-0.

Kubel's three-run homer into the upper deck in right, cut the margin. Hunter's RBI single in the seventh and Luis Castillo's RBI single in the ninth capped the scoring.
