Angels rally to down Cards

Baseball Betting Lines

06/09/2007 - St. Louis, MO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Casey Kotchman and Mike Napoli each drove in two runs and scored once during a six-run seventh inning, as the Angels defeated the Cardinals, 10-6, in the opener of a three-game set at Busch Stadium.

Kotchman ended 2-for-3 with three RBI and Vladimir Guerrero went 2-for-6 with two RBI for the Angels, who have won six of seven. Garret Anderson added three hits and an RBI and Howie Kendrick also had three hits for Los Angeles, which improved to 22-7 over its last 29 contests.

Albert Pujols went 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI for the Cardinals, who have lost two straight. Kelly Stinnett also homered and drove in a pair and Chris Duncan went yard for St. Louis, which fell to 2-2 on its current six- game homestand and earlier in the day signed an familiar face to the Angels.

The Cardinals agreed to terms with former Angels closer Troy Percival on a minor league contract. Percival, who has 324 career saves, was sent to Triple- A Memphis to get major league ready. The right-hander retired after suffering a right forearm injury in July, 2005.

Trailing 4-3, the Angels took the lead with a six-run seventh. Tyler Johnson began the inning on the hill for the Cards and immediately yielded a base hit to Guerrero. Gary Matthews Jr. followed with a ground-rule double and Kotchman cleared the bases with a base hit to left. Kotchman, who moved to second on the throw home, then scored on Anderson's base hit.

Ryan Franklin entered the game for St. Louis, but didn't fare much better. After Kendrick doubled, Napoli also hit a two-bagger to plate two more runs for an 8-4 lead. Orlando Cabrera later ended the inning's scoring when his sac fly plated Napoli.

Pujols made it a 9-5 game in the home half of the inning with a run-scoring single, but that was pretty much it for St. Louis.

The teams exchanged ninth-inning runs. Chone Figgins scored when after stealing third, Stinnett's throw went down the left field line, giving the Angels a 10-5 lead. Aaron Miles doubled home So Taguchi to again make it a four-run game, but the rally fell short as Francisco Rodriguez struck out Duncan and Pujols to end the game.

Johnson (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on four hits. He faced four batters, not recording an out. He wasted a decent outing for the struggling Kip Wells. The right-hander surrendered just three runs on seven hits, striking out six and walking five, over five innings. Wells entered the game having lost two straight and nine of his last 10 starts.

Angels reliever Hector Carrasco (1-1) benefited from the big inning, getting the win after working a 1-2-3 sixth. Starter Bartolo Colon last just four innings and allowed four runs on seven hits. The right-hander has allowed 18 earned runs in 14 2/3 innings over his last three starts.

The Cardinals scored a run in each of the first four innings with Duncan, Stinnett and Pujols all hitting solo homers in the first through third innings, respectively. In the fourth, Stinnett singled home Juan Encarnacion, who had earlier singled and moved to third when Colon uncorked an errant throw on a pick-off attempt.

The Angels cut the deficit to one run thanks to a three-run fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Guerrero singled home two runners and, following a strikeout by Matthews, Kotchman singled home Cabrera to make it a 4-3 contest.

Game Notes

The Cardinals announced prior to the game that their day/night doubleheader originally scheduled for Friday, September 14 against the Chicago Cubs has been moved to Saturday, September 15 at the request of Major League Baseball and the Players' Association. The makeup was due to the postponed game on April 29, the day of pitcher Josh Hancock's untimely death...Pujols has 13 homers this season...Duncan has 10 HRs...Stinnett hit his first HR.
