06/02/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The battle for first place in the American League Central is again front and center this evening as the Cleveland Indians welcome the Detroit Tigers to Jacobs Field for the third test of a four-game set.
Clocking in at more than three and a half hours, the teams put on an offensive thriller on Friday night, one that was claimed by Cleveland by a score of 12-11.
In winning their third straight game and moving to an impressive 19-4 at the Jake, their best start at home in club history, the Tribe posted 16 hits in the barrage, none more important than the two-out single in the bottom of the ninth by David Dellucci to cap a five-run rally and win the game.
A hot-hitting Victor Martinez crushed a pair of home runs and finished with four RBI, giving him runs batted in over eight straight games, one shy of the team record. Jhonny Peralta also homered and tacked on a pair of doubles as he knocked in two and scored twice for the squad.
Cleveland used a total of five pitchers on the night, with Roberto Hernandez earning his third win of the campaign even though he pitched just one-third of an inning. Starter Fausto Carmona gave up five runs on 10 hits, striking out five over six innings of action.
The Tigers, who won 13 of the 19 games against Cleveland a season ago, including 7-of-9 at Jacobs Field, got a home run from Craig Monroe who finished with just the one hit and a couple of strikeouts to go along with his three RBI. Magglio Ordonez scored three times, as did Placido Polanco, who totaled four hits in the setback.
Mike Maroth surrendered three home runs and five runs overall for the Tigers in six innings of work, leaving Todd Jones to become the hard-luck loser when he permitted a stunning five runs on seven hits in just one inning. As a result, the defending AL Champs are now 4 1/2 games out of contention in the division.
Taking the mound for the Tigers this evening is Chad Durbin. The righthander, who has seen action in eight major league seasons, has won four straight decisions since opening the 2007 campaign with a loss to Baltimore on the road.
On Monday the righthander from Illinois dropped his season ERA down to 4.39 as he allowed just one earned run on three hits and three walks over six innings versus Tampa Bay on the road. Durbin managed just a single strikeout in the 6-5 setback to the Rays.
Currently 10 games under .500 for his career (21-31), Durbin has an even 3-3 mark versus the Indians all-time, but has struggled with a lofty 8.07 ERA in those outings.
As for the Tribe, they've slated Cliff Lee to counter Durbin this time around.
Like his counterpart for this outing, Lee also pitched on Monday, giving up three runs on six hits over five innings in a 5-3 loss to Boston. During the setback Lee recorded four strikeouts, pushing him past the 500 K plateau for his six-year career.
The lefthander is making his first appearance of the season versus the Tigers, a team against whom he has a 3-5 record and a 4.92 ERA over the years.
Currently tied for second in the AL in home runs with 67, the Indians show three players with double-digit homers already in Martinez (11), Peralta (11) and Travis Hafner (10). The former is also second in the league in runs batted in with 48, just two behind Detroit's Ordonez.
Not only is Ordonez among the leaders in RBI, he is also third in the league in batting at a .353 clip and is tied for the team lead in home runs with Gary Sheffield at 12. On the subject of Sheffield, he was suspended for three games on Friday following his ejection in Thursday's contest. Having filed an appeal, Sheffield will continue to play for the Tigers until hearings are held and decisions rendered.
